DIY Essential Oil Car Refresher
Making an essential oil car refresher is a fun and simple DIY project! Here’s a quick recipe for two different methods: a hanging air freshener and a jar diffuser.
Method 1: Hanging Essential Oil Air Freshener
Ingredients:
1/4 cup water
10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil (like lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus)
1 tablespoon white vinegar (optional, for additional freshness)
A small piece of fabric or felt (cut into a shape you like)
String or twine
Instructions:
Mix Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine water, essential oil, and vinegar if using.
Soak the Fabric: Dip your fabric or felt in the mixture, allowing it to soak up the solution. Squeeze out any excess liquid.
Attach String: Tie a piece of string or twine around the fabric shape, creating a loop for hanging.
Hang It Up: Hang it from your rearview mirror or another suitable location in your car. Refresh the scent every few weeks by adding a few more drops of essential oil to the fabric.
Note: This should last about 1 to 3 weeks. The longevity depends on the type and concentration of essential oil used, the airflow in your car, and temperature fluctuations. You can refresh the scent by adding a few more drops of essential oil as needed.
Method 2: Essential Oil Jar Diffuser
Ingredients:
1 small jar with a lid that would fit into your car cup holder
1/4 cup baking soda
10-20 drops of essential oil (like peppermint, orange, or cedarwood). Experiment with the amount of drops. Some essential oils are stronger than others so you might need less or you might need more.
Decorative fabric or paper (optional)
A few wooden skewers or bamboo sticks
Instructions:
Combine Baking Soda and Oils: In a bowl, mix baking soda with your chosen essential oil(s).
Fill the Jar: Transfer the mixture into the glass jar and spread it evenly.
Add Skewers: Insert wooden skewers or bamboo sticks into the jar to help diffuse the scent. The baking soda will absorb odors while the oils provide fragrance.
Seal and Decorate: If you want, cover the jar with decorative fabric or paper secured with a rubber band or string, allowing the scent to escape while keeping dust out.
Place in Your Car: Set the jar in a cup holder or on a flat surface in your car. Refresh the scent by adding more essential oil every few weeks.
Note: This should last about 1 to 2 months. The baking soda absorbs odors, and the essential oils will gradually evaporate. The scent may become less potent over time, but you can refresh it by adding more essential oil to the mixture as needed.
Method 3: Buy one on Amazon
If you’re feeling lazy, you can always buy an essential oil car diffuser online at amazon. As of today, they have a really cute small one that you can put in your car cup holder and it’s under $20. Here is a picture of it. It looks much larger than it really is. In person, it’s small and super cute and powerful.
Tips:
Experiment with different essential oil combinations to find a scent you love!
Keep the air freshener out of direct sunlight to prevent damage to the materials.
Always use 100% pure essential oils with no chemicals.
Start with less essential oils to make sure it’s not too powerful of a smell.
Keep essential oils away from kids and adults.
