DIY Laundry Scent Booster Recipe
I’m sure you have seen “laundry scent boosters beads” - a popular one being “Downy Fresh Scent Unstopables In-Wash Laundry Scent Booster Beads”. Like myself, you might have even used them. There’s no denying they make your clothes smell amazing, however, there’s a couple of problems with them. One, they are not all natural and can cause skin irritations and two, they are expensive! For for a 24 ounce bottle, they are selling today for about $16 on amazon. If you have a large family, and you are doing laundry 4 or 5 times a week, it can cost way too much money to use it.
The good news is you can make your own for a fraction of the cost. Here, you are going to learn how to make this all natural laundry booster recipe, made with essential oils, from home and save about $12 for a 24 oz bottle. Not only that, but you will be using essential oils that research has shown are good for the skin. Here’s a wonderful smelling simple DIY recipe.
DIY Laundry Scent Booster Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups Epsom Salts (unscented). (You can buy them at your local TJ Maxx on sale or even CVS or Grocery Outlet … or if you’re like me, you’ll want to buy them in bulk at a place like Amazon. Right now, 19 pounds of Dr. Teal’s unscented epsom salts are priced at just under $24 on Amazon. That’s about $1.27 for 2 cups of epsom salts!)
20 drops Rose 100% Pure Organic Essential Oil (A .33 oz bottle of 100% pure essential oil is $7.19 right now on amazon. You should get about 200 drops of essential oil in this bottle. Remember, you’ll only be using 20 drops for this recipe — 72 cents worth)
8 drops Sandalwood 100% Pure Essential Oil (This .34 oz bottle costs about $9 on amazon right now. You should get 200 drops out of this bottle, but you are only using 8 drops in this recipe so that’s 36 cents)
12 drops Bergamot 100% Pure Organic Essential Oil (This 1 ounce bottle costs about $9 right now on amazon. You should get about 600 drops out of this bottle, but you’re using only 12 drops for this recipe — only 18 cents).
NOTE: Always use 100% pure essential oils made with no chemicals.
The total cost of a 24 oz bottle of Homemade Laundry Booster is approximately $3.80. Compare that to about $16 for 24 oz worth of “Downy Fresh Scent Unstopables In-Wash Laundry Scent Booster Beads”. (Actually, if you buy it in larger quantities, you might be able to get it for even cheaper. But even if you don’t buy it in bulk, you’re still saving about $12 a bottle. Plus, it’s natural with no chemicals and much better for your skin!)
Instructions:
Put all of the essential oils in a little bowl and mix.
Add the mixed essential oils to the 2 cups of epsom salts.
Mix really well. (If you don’t mix well, you could get some oil on your clothes and it could leave a stain.)
Put mixture in a glass container with a lid.
Shake it really good and put aside to use when you are doing a load of laundry.
When you do a load of laundry, put in 1 to 2 tablespoons of the homemade laundry booster in with the laundry.
Every washer is different so make sure the load you are doing is one that includes a lot of water. If not, you could get spots on your clothes.
Tip: If you want your clothes to smell good for days, don’t put them in the dryer when they’re done. I hang my sweaters up to dry and they will smell amazing for days!
Why Use these Specific Essential Oils?
Besides smelling incredible, all 3 essential oils - bergamot essential oil, rose essential oil and sandalwood essential oils - have anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe irritated or sensitive skin. They all can be beneficial for conditions such as rosacea and eczema.
