Essential Oils for Chronic Pain


In exploring the transforming benefits of essential oils in pain management, studies conducted in renowned hospitals across Iran and Turkey have shed light on the therapeutic potential of natural remedies for chronic pain. From the soothing properties of lavender oil at Ghazvin University of Medical Sciences to the invigorating effects of peppermint oil at Duzce University Medical Faculty Hospital, these innovative research efforts highlight a growing trend in integrative health practices. With the promise of alleviating discomfort from conditions like osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, essential oils such as rosemary, ginger, and frankincense are gaining traction as holistic alternatives to conventional pain relief methods.

These five studies show how these natural solutions are revolutionizing pain management in clinical settings and enhancing the quality of life for countless individuals.  

1.      Peppermint Oil for Musculoskeletal Pain:

    • Participants: 66 patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

    • Location: Turkey (Duzce University Medical Faculty Hospital).

    • Method: Participants applied a cream containing peppermint oil (10%) to painful areas twice daily for 2 weeks. Pain intensity was assessed using the VAS and the McGill Pain Questionnaire.

    • Results: The study reported a significant reduction in pain levels.

2.      Rosemary Oil for Pain Relief from Osteoarthritis:

    • Participants: 100 patients with knee osteoarthritis.

    • Location: Iran (Shiraz University of Medical Sciences)

    • Method: Patients received a topical application of rosemary essential oil (3 drops mixed with a carrier oil) on the affected knee twice daily for 4 weeks. Pain assessments were made using the VAS and the Lequesne Index.

    • Results: Participants experienced notable pain relief and improved function.

3.      Ginger Essential Oil for Chronic Knee Pain:

    • Participants: 80 patients with chronic knee pain.

    • Location: Iran (Tehran University of Medical Sciences)

    • Method: Patients were instructed to apply ginger essential oil (5 drops mixed with a carrier oil) to the affected knee twice a day for 4 weeks. Pain was measured using the VAS before and after the intervention.

    • Results: Results showed a significant decrease in pain levels.

4.      Frankincense Oil for Chronic Pain from Fibromyalgia:

    • Participants: 50 fibromyalgia patients.

    • Location: Turkey (Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital)

    • Method: Patients used frankincense essential oil in a massage oil (mixed with carrier oil) applied to painful areas for 30 minutes, twice a week, over 8 weeks. Pain levels were evaluated using the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire.

    • Results: The results showed a significant decrease in pain levels and tenderness.

.5.      Lavender Essential Oil for Chronic Pain from Abdominal Surgery:

    • Participants: 60 patients undergoing abdominal surgery.

    • Location: Iran (Ghazvin University of Medical Sciences)

    • Method: Patients inhaled lavender essential oil via a diffuser for 30 minutes before surgery. Pain levels were measured using a visual analog scale (VAS) postoperatively.

    • Results: The results showed a significant reduction in pain and anxiety levels compared to the control group.
